What is Self Fusing Silicone Tape?

What is Self-fusing silicone tape?  Made with silicone elastomer or flourosilicone, self fusing silicone tape is a single-strand, cold-extruded silicone with amazing characteristics and properties.  While a wide variety of flourosilicones exist, and silicone tapes vary dramatically in quality from one supplier to another, the common ingredient is silicone elastomer.  Silicone elastomer is inherently chemical resistant, heat resistant, and electrically resistant.  Commonly these self-fusing silicone tapes all have similar resistance such as 500F Degrees (260c) heat resistance and 400 volts/mil electrical resistance.  Thereafter, fusion quality and long term resistance to breakdown varies tremendously among different suppliers and manufacturers.   The most critical factor that should be considered is bond strength, or fusion quality, as this is not an inherent quality of silicone elastomer, but relies upon additional compounds and additives that cause the silicone to become “self-fusing.”  As much as a 600% difference in fusion quality has been revealed through comparison testing, which very simply could mean the difference between the product meeting the application needs or not.  A poor fusing quality silicone tape is of little use in emergency situations or long term use.
